It is almost entirely surrounded by water, which has paved the way for some excellent urban beaches. Cadiz is thought to be one of the oldest cities in Western Europe, having been discovered by Phoenician sailors around 3,000 years ago and it has always played a significant role as a seaport and trading post. During the 18th century, Spain’s galleons explored the world from Cadiz and many of the city’s historic look-out towers and weathered old buildings remain today. The city is home to some magnificent architecture including the Cathedral and churches of Santa Cruz and San Felipe Neri. It is here that Spain defied Napoleon’s siege and established a provisional government with its own liberal constitution. Cadiz provides an ideal point of access for the Guadalquivir River and the Doñana National Park.
